Retailers Replace ‘How We’re Helping The Environment’ Emails With Two Weeks Of Black Friday Shopping Deals
November 25, 2021

BUY! BUY! BUY!

It’s Black Friday week. Inboxes and social media feeds have been inundated with posts about Black Friday sales. Customers are confused. Just weeks earlier, it seemed like everyone was talking about climate change and the environment with businesses informing customers that they were doing their bit.

But that has been put on hold. For now.

Maggie Capital, Marketing Manager at Catch of the Day said, “We care about the environment, we do. Particularly when we can use it as a way to appear relatable. But our customers want us to put all that aside for a few weeks for Black Friday sales… Oh, and a few months for Christmas, then Boxing Day sales, then back to school sales, then Mother’s Day sales, Stocktake Sale and Father’s Day sales.”

Black Friday is an American holiday the day after Thanksgiving that promotes the start of the holiday shopping season. In recent years, Australian businesses have adopted the holiday. But unlike Americans, Australians prefer to skip the whole ‘being thankful thing’ and get straight to what is important. Bargains.

Black Friday is criticised for its focus on frenzied buying and the impact that such consumerism has on the environment. Recent reports indicate that in Australia each year, the average Australian is responsible for 23kg of clothing that goes into landfill.

Jack Bun, from the Australian Shoppers Association, said, “Australian’s know what’s important. Shopping. And there are lots of deals to be had. There is no faster way to eternal happiness than taking 30% off something you don’t need.”

More to come.
