Sara Brine, 32, is at a New Year’s Eve party. While other guests are making their New Year resolutions, Sara is noticeably quiet. She told Babbler, “In 2020 I made a bid deal of it, saying, ‘This is my year.’ Then in 2021 I went further and said, ‘Seriously. This is my year. I can feel it in my bones!’ So embarrassing.”
Sara reported that despite her predictions, 2020 and 2021 were her worst years on record. There was a global pandemic, lockdowns, she lost her job, was dumped by her girlfriend and found out that her dog was adopted.
Sara has pledged to keep her mouth shut this New Year’s Eve. Her friends are grateful.
Michelle, Sara’s best friend, witnessed both New Year’s prophecies. She told Babbler, “Who does she think she is, predicting the events and mood of an entire year? If she’s so clever how come she didn’t know her dog was adopted? He looks nothing like her!”
While Sara concedes her foresight skills are not as sharp as she thought, she suggests her inaccurate prediction may in fact be what caused her year to be so traumatic.
“I think I jinxed it,” she said.
Sara even believes that her prediction could have ‘jinxed’ the world. Setting into motion a chain of events that made her year, and the year of many, the worst on record.
She said, “I know it seems unlikely that my resolution jinxed the entire world, that would be total magical thinking, but I’m shutting up this year, just in case.”
Michelle agrees, “Oh yes, we all blame Sara for the events of the past two years. That’s totally on-brand for Sara. She’s a nightmare! She’s still my best friend though.”
