A FAMILIAR MEDICINE-AND-SPICE-RACK FLAVOUR!
“I didn’t want to say anything,” Amy Cottrell, 29, explains in hushed tones. “I know it’s the drink of the moment, but I did a lot of jäger-bombs on my Contiki trip through Europe. I’m pretty sure Negroni’s are just Jägermeister served in a faux-crystal cocktail tumbler.”
Negroni-fever has taken the nation by storm and is prominent on cocktail menus in some of the country’s hippest bars and restaurants.
Yet the drink’s distinct flavour – a combination of cough syrup and out of date spices found in the back of grandma’s pantry – is strikingly similar to Jägermeister, a German drink popular with young people that want to get absolutely hammered.
‘Hanky’, an upscale Melbourne cocktail bar, charges $28 for a Negroni cocktail. Head bartender, Matt Richards, has confirmed that Cottrell’s suspicious are correct, “Busted! We hoped people wouldn’t notice. But it’s true. Negoni’s are made from 95% Jägermeister. We just add a fancy garnish like dehydrated orange peel or sprinkle a bit of old Potpourri on it; people have no idea.”
