Maggi Waden, 35, is fed up with participating in free speech. She wants to get off toxic social media. She just doesn’t know how.
“I’ve spent days reading articles and watching videos to figure out how to cancel my Facebook account. I thought I had, until my aunty tagged me in a SpongeBob SquarePants meme and I realised my profile is still active.”
At her peak, Maggi would post on Facebook multiple times a day. Anything from “Fri-yay” to “I need my coffee. Grrrrr!” These days, she uses it to read posts from a group she joined when she thought she was gluten intolerant, and to keep in touch with a couple she met backpacking in 2009.
She is frustrated leaving the platform is not easier.
“It’s cancel culture gone wrong. I’ve heard about social media platforms perpetuating cancel culture, now I’ve experienced it first-hand.”
Maggi created an ‘Ask Question’ post to get answers. She said, “There was a complete pile on of information. But when I followed the instructions, I kept being brought back to my news feed. Why is everyone else getting cancelled and I’m not?!”
Maggi now believes she may be a victim of a witch hunt. Despite her best efforts, she has also been unable to cancel her Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram accounts.
“It’s this overly woke world we’re living in. You can’t say anything these days to get accounts cancelled. I’m still paying for Amazon Prime and my free three-month subscription lapsed in 2020.”
