Footy’s ‘Night of Nights,’ the Brownlow Medal, was held last night at Melbourne’s Crown Casino. Audiences watching at home were thrilled to witness yet another very white coverage of a red-carpet event.
Samantha Wayne, a mother-of-two, was excited, “It’s been so long since I’ve been able to see white people at a prestigious event. The Logies were way back in June. I was beginning to wonder when we’d see more rich white people on the red carpet.”
While representing diversity on our screens is a priority for some broadcasters and programs, the media coverage of the Brownlow’s was more traditional.
Samantha Wayne found the familiarity of old-fashioned media coverage comforting, “Recently we’ve had a bit of a scare with the whole ‘Little Mermaid’ scandal. I was worried that like the Ariel of the past, our white stars were becoming extinct.”
A spokesperson for Channel 7 told Babbler, “We are committed to diversity. If you look closely at the coverage of the Brownlow’s red-carpet you will see there were several different shades of fake tan, ranging from honey-chestnut to ‘oompa-Loompa orange.’
More to come.
